The Benefits of a First Look
A first look is when the couple has a private moment to see each other before their wedding ceremony. It's a fairly new tradition in the wedding scape, and if you're considering it, here is my perspective.
A first look allows the couple to take it all in.
During your wedding, everyone you love will be in one room. Everyone will be dying to speak to you and all eyes will be on you and your partner. Competition for your attention can be intense and chaotic! This can be overwhelming for a lot of brides and grooms. A first look allows the couple to cherish the quiet moments together where you can reflect on your special day without the distraction of all your loved ones watching.
A first look helps the couple relax during and after the ceremony.
Planning a first look for you and your fiance takes the pressure off at the alter. It is incredibly intimate and it can be emotional seeing your partner for the first time in their gown or suit. You will be overcome with emotion either way, and a first look allows you to experience it with just you two. Once the anticipation is over, you can really enjoy your ceremony and your reception.
A first look means you'll have more time to take formal photos.
Without a first look, your formal photos will most likely be taken immediately after your ceremony. This does not allow a ton of time (typically an hour or so during cocktail hour), and may feel rushed. If you have a large family and are hoping to get those important photos with everyone, it can significantly cut down on the time you have with just your partner to take photos. A first look allows you to get a lot of formal photos done before the ceremony and if not, you can use the cocktail hour to get whatever photos you may have missed. Additionally, if you are able to get all of your formal photos done before the ceremony, then you and your partner are able to enjoy cocktail hour with ease! You'll get to walk around without feeling rushed and get candid photos with your guests. Not to mention, cocktail hour will usually have appetizers and drinks!
First look pictures are purely magical.
Every time I have photographed a first look, they have been absolutely beautiful. I have never had a couple regret doing it. The photos are unique because both partners are able to be photographed together the moment they see each other. Imagine being in the same photo as your spouse the moment the two of your eyes meet! Most likely it will just be the two of you in the photos (no guests, officiant or other members of the wedding party will be in the background). Without a distracting background, your photos are more likely to look intimate, emotional, magical, and sweet.
Whether you do a first look is up to you and your partner. If you decide to do one, you won't regret it!
